Rallycross: Kristoffersson strong in Hockenheim, but without luck

Johan Kristoffersson à Hockenheim

No joy for the new team Volkswagen RX Sweden in Hockenheim (D). At the second event of the FIA World Rallycross Championship, Johan Kristoffersson (S) finished seventh, and team-mate Anton Marklund (S) finished in 15th place.

Kristoffersson in particular showed the great potential of the 600 hp Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar throughout the weekend: With multiple best times in the qualifying races, he clinched pole position for the second semi-final. However, in that race Kristofferson’s car was hit by a rival while he was in the lead, which cause tyre damage to the Polo.

But Kristoffersson refused to give up in front of thousands of spectators and with a brilliant driving performance led the field until the end of the fifth lap. However, he lost ground after that and missed out on making it into the final by just one position when he finished fourth. Victory in Hockenheim went to Mattias Ekström (S, Audi). In the drivers’ standings, Kristoffersson is now in fourth place with 39 points, Marklund is 14th with nine points. In the team standings, Volkswagen RX Sweden remain second with 48 points. The Swedish team is in with a chance of making up points on championship leaders EKS (93 points) next weekend (13–15 May), when the WRX elite take a trip to Mettet (B).
