Dakar X-Raid Yamaha : Camelia Liparoti finishes sixth overall

– 15th overall for Annett Fischer
– Strong second week

The three Yamaha YXZ1000R prototypes continued to improve dramatically in the second week of the 2022 Dakar Rally. Camelia Liparoti (ITA) and Xavier Blanco (ESP) finished a sensational sixth overall. The all-woman team of Annett Fischer (GER) and Annie Seel (SWE) ended the Dakar in 15th place. The two also secured victory in the Women’s Trophy! The Qatari pair of Ahmed Alkuwari and Nasser Alkuwari were 32nd overall after a number of issues.

Liparoti climbed into the top ten on stage three, and the Italian stayed there for the rest of the Dakar. Her stage results improved all the time, particularly in week two, and she consistently worked her way up the overall standings. In the end, she finished the desert rally in sixth place.

Camelia Liparoti: « I am really happy that we all made it to the finish. The first week was not easy, as we had to make a few changes and improvements to the Yamaha. However, the second week went really well. I took it easier today. I did not want to risk losing my place in the top ten. »

Without the loss of time on day four, when Fischer and Seel’s car became stuck in a mud hole, they would definitely have been looking at a top-ten result. The all-woman team went on to produce many good performances on the individual stages, and made it back into the top 20 on leg ten. They continued to climb the standings and, after more than 4,000 kilometres of racing, crossed the finish line in 15th place.

Annett Fischer: « We had a really good special stage. On the 160 kilometres we gained another two positions in the overall standings. We also won the women’s trophy. »

The third crew in a Yamaha YXZ1000R prototype did not have an easy first week. However, Ahmed Alkuwari performed well after the rest day and enjoyed some good individual results. He also gradually worked his way up the overall standing and eventually finished 32nd.

Ahmed Alkuwari: « It was a tough and tiring Dakar. We struggled with a few issues at first. However, we stuck with it. I hope that I can drive the Yamaha side-by-side again, as I want to show what we are capable of. »
