The Extreme E adventure beginsABT starts in new racing series with CUPRA and Mattias Ekström

ABT Sportslineis taking on perhaps the most spectacular challenge in international motorsport: the company is competing in the Extreme E racing series, which will be running withpurely electric SUVs from early2021. At spectacular locations such as Brazil, glaciersorGreenland, eight teams, each with one woman and one manas the driversin the team, will be competingagainst each other, whileat the same time drawingattention to climate change.

ABTis tackling the new project together with a top-class partner: the sporty brand CUPRAwill be represented with its design on the racing car christened as the ‘ODYSSEY 21’. CUPRAand ABTSportslinehave already been close and successful partners for years in the refinement of road cars.

The topics of electric mobilityand sustainabilityhave been part of daily business at ABT Sportslinefor a decade now. The subsidiary ABT e-Linedevelops and produces electrified versions of the Caddy and Transporter models in cooperation with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. ABTwas a founding member of Formula E as the only German team and is still the most successful teamin the international racing series after six seasons.

Extreme E, CUPRA, ABT–in this combination,a wish of many motorsport fans will also come true: CUPRAbrand ambassador Mattias Ekströmwill return as a driverto his team ABT Sportsline.The Swede is considered as one of the best and most versatile racing drivers in the world and was already a member of the Kempten-based DTM team from 2001 to 2017. He celebrated two titles with them, and in 2016 he also became FIA World Rallycross drivers’ champion. Ekström has been an ambassador for the CUPRAbrand for a year now.

Extreme E is unlike anything we have seen in motorsport before. The series brings electric motorsport to the most spectacular and famous places in the world, in orderto demonstrate the performance of purely electric SUVs and to draw attention to the challenges of the respective ecosystems.

An off-road courseof about eight kilometres in length will be driven, on which several gates have to be passed. Each event consists of two racing days. On Saturdays,the qualifying races will beheld, and on Sundays the semi-finals and finals will take place. The special element of suspense: each team’s driver pairingconsists of one woman and one man,who take turns in the cockpit.Mattias Ekström’steammatewill be announced by ABT Sportslineat a later date.
