Dunlop 24 Hours of Le Mans: Pre-Race Facts

Dunlop’s 15 teams, all in the LMP2 class, are ready for the big day on Saturday when the lights will go green for the 86th Le Mans 24 Hours.

20 Dunlop engineers will support our partners for the 24 Hour race to maximise tyre performance and consistency, support on race strategy and tyre choice throughout the 24 hours.

Dunlop has a vast range of 24 hour race experience with members having up to 18 years of experience of 24 hour racing each.

Here are the key facts ahead of the race:      
Dunlop Tyres
5 LMP2 Specs for full 2018/19 WEC Super Season
– 3 slicks/ dry weather options (A/B/C)
– 1 intermediate wet option
– 1 full wet option
– Open tyre competition

2018 24 Hours of Le Mans
– 15 out of 20 entries have chosen Dunlop
– 56 dry weather tyres permitted
– Unlimited wet and intermediate tyres
** Changes from 2017: warm-up tyres included in allocation & no ‘joker’ additional tyres

Dunlop 2018 LMP2 tyre characteristics :
– Increased temperature operating windows
– Extended consistency throughout multiple stints
– Extended tyre operating windows bringing more flexibility in tyre strategies
– Improved performance
– Better feel and feedback for the drivers
– Accelerated warm-up to assist with race starts and safety car periods

Race Strategy notes/ Stint requirements:
– For 2018 tyres and refuelling are now permitted simultaneously.
– Previously multiple tyre stints gained an advantage by saving time in the pits.
– 2018 strategies will hinge on the tyre restrictions.
– 2017 saw around 39 stints for LMP2 cars.
– 56 tyres/14 sets are available for the race = teams need to triple stint on average.

The Le Mans 24 Hours starts at 3pm CEST on Saturday 16th June.
