Nasser Al Attiyah and Joan Barreda, winners of Baja Aragón

Qatari Nasser Al-Attiyah scored his fourth victory in Baja Aragon after clocking a fantastic time in the last special ahead of Orlando Terranova and Saturday’s leader Mikko Hirvonen..

The Qatari made sure that he would return next year, with the intention of winning again. In addition, he stressed that Baja Aragon is a race « with many participants of very good level, which should be maintained for many more years. »

 

In second position, Argentine Orlando Terranova, who has sealed a « very comforting » Baja, has expressed his desire « to win the test someday. » His teammate in X-Raid Mini, Finn Mikko Hirvonen, was finally third, although he started this morning as provisional leader.

In his third participation in the Baja, Mikko Hirvonen finished third again, a « curse » he hopes to break in the future.

Joan Barreda scored his fourth victory in Baja Aragon, marking a final time of 06:50:12. Dominating from the beginning to the end in all specials, Monster Energy Honda Team’s rider had a more than 6 minutes advantage over Joan Pedrero. Barreda’s water carrier, Michael Metge finished third ahead of David Adrià.

In the category of quads, the winner was Arnaldo Martins, overtaking local ace Mario Gajón (winner of Baja Aragon on three occasions) by over 30 minutes. The third step of the podium was occupied by Miguel Antonio Esteban.

On its debut in the calendar of Dakar Challenge, as Baja Aragon’s winner in this category, former Spanish rally champion Óscar Fuertes receives the free entry for the 2018 Dakar.

In buggies, the podium was formed by Jordi Serra, Pedro Delgado and José Luis Peña.

In the trucks’ category, Martin Macik scored his first Baja Aragon victory as driver after being successful as his father’s co-driver in 2009. His compatriots, Jaroslav Valtr and Tomas Vratny completed the podium.

The prizegiving of the event, which was held in the Exhibition and Congress Center of Teruel, was attended by Manuel Aviñó, President of the Spanish Federation of Automobile and José Manuel Valmaña, City Councilor of Teruel.
