Joel Eriksson claimed his maiden victory in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at Spa-Francorchamps (B). The Swede, driving for the Motopark team, triumphed at the demanding Grand Prix circuit, crossing the finish line first ahead of Anthoine Hubert (F) and George Russel (GB). The rookie in the Dallara F312 Volkswagen started Saturday afternoon’s third race from second on the grid and passed Russell in the first few metres.
Eriksson then successfully fended off the Briton’s attacks to take the chequered flag. Eriksson had previously caught the eye with a second-place finish in race two on Friday. The 18-year-old leads the rookie competition with 280 points, five clear of Hubert (275). Eriksson is now sixth in the overall standings with 136 points. The next round of the Formula 3 European Championship takes place at the Nürburgring (D) from 9 to 11 September.
